Course Update and Happy Holidays!
Overall, the Golf Course conditions were very good throughout the entire year. Hurricane Irma hindered the timing of our fall golf course preparation, but overall we were very lucky with the minimal damage from the storm.
The two summer projects we completed this year both came in on budget and were completed on time. The new tee on hole #5 is a great addition; the old tee was very small and the new tee is much more spacious and gives us many options from all tee setups. The native cleanup work we did this summer also came out very nicely and has opened up many new views throughout the golf course. The clearing projects over the past three summers have really opened up the golf course and created a much cleaner look to the property.
The cool snap we had the second week of December dropped the soil temperatures about 15 degrees and turned the greens, tees and fairways off color a bit. The cold weather brought us early morning temperatures in the low 40s and some patches of frost. This was quite a change from the weather we were having with lows in the 60s and highs in the mid 80s.
On Monday, Dec. 18, we applied granular fertilizer to the entire golf course and also applied some liquid iron on the greens, tees, and fairways to help green things back up. This nutrient application along with some warm weather forecasted now until after Christmas will help green up the turf nicely.
December is trending a bit drier than the past three months: we have had only two inches of rainfall in the first 20 days of the month. September, October, and November brought us 30.4 inches of rainfall, which was just under half of the total rainfall for the year (66 inches for all of 2017 YTD). That being said, the golf course is still very wet in spots. The lakes have dropped a few inches over the past three weeks, but the water table remains about a foot higher than normal for this time of year.
On behalf of the entire Hobe Sound Golf Club Golf Course Maintenance Team, I wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
