Course Update - June 21
The Golf Course Maintenance staff has had a very productive start to our summer renovation and project schedule. The #5 tee project is 90% complete with only the grassing to be completed. Due to the wet weather throughout Florida, we will grass the tee about a week later than scheduled. This delay will not affect the opening of the tee in the fall. We still have some work on the cart path and native areas on hole 5; this work will be completed after we grass the tee and before it opens in the fall.
The mowing of the native areas went very well with the machine just finishing up on June 19. We mowed about 10-12 acres of upland preserve and some wetland preserve areas. We had to change some of the areas that we worked in due to the 4.5” of rain we received the first week. We mowed preserve areas on holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18 and the driving range. The largest area we mowed was the upland buffer and wetland preserve “K” on hole #13. This preserve was dominated by Wild Willow and Brazilian Pepper; both of these plants are non-native and needed to be cleared per our agreement with South Florida Water Management (SFWMD). SFWMD is the governing body for all water use permits in South Florida, ours included.
We will be doing some post mowing cleanup work along the edges of the mowed areas. This work will consist of raking up the debris left by the machine and applying crushed rock to the edges. We will prioritize the areas that were mowed and clean up as many areas as our budget allows. We will also be removing the dead vines later on in the summer that were left in the trees from the mowing, again as our budget allows.
Our first round of renovation on greens, tees, approaches, fairways, and the driving range has just about been completed. We still have to core the driving range and deep rough on the golf course, but all other work has been finished as of this week. We cored and vertical mowed the approaches and driving range tees this week.
We get a bit of a break from the renovation work until the end of July when we start the process all over again. So for the next 30-40 days, we will be working on grooming the golf course, weed control, and miscellaneous trim and maintenance projects.
